BANDAI NAMCO is one of the most well-known and respected brands in the amusement industry worldwide. It was formed in 2005, through the merger of two industry giants in their own right: NAMCO and BANDAI.
NAMCO ‘s roots go back to 1955 with founder Masaya Nakamura, who produced coin-operated amusement rides that operated on the roof of a department store in Yokohama, Japan. It was more than two decades later that the Nakamura Amusement Machine Manufacturing Company, as it was then called, started their journey into video games with their first release in 1978 Gee Bee.
Just two years after stepping into this new territory, NAMCO released what is believed to be the most popular and widely recognised video game of all time:
PAC-MAN. Success followed success, with the company releasing titles such as Galaga, Tekken, Ridge Racer and Time Crisis in the years that followed.
Even older than NAMCO, BANDAI was officially formed in 1950 as a producer of games and toys and very quickly grew in size. Just ten years after forming, there was already a subsidiary based out of New York, with BANDAI’s exported toy cars proving a roaring success. By the 1980’s they had become one of the biggest toy companies in the world, creating their own ranges as well as holding the licences for many popular characters.
